Howto:

copy the script file anywhere in your system
add the line

or for logging
*/5 * * * * root   /anywhere/in/your/system/traffic_counter.sh 
> /var/log/traffic.log
configure the script

I am using it together with the rrd-tool after this howto 
(http://martybugs.net/linux/rrdtool/traffic.cgi) 
and added in my 
/var/www/htdocs/rrdtool/traffic.cgi

print "<a href='?trend=$graph'><img src='$graph-day.png' border='1'></a>";
print "<br>";
}
}
else
{
open(traffic, "</var/www/htdocs/rrdtool/$name.traffic");
my @data = <traffic> ;
