It's related to the device model configuration. I had previously tried to map one LV to /dev/hda1 and another LV to /dev/hda2. If I simply map each to a different full hard disk image, everything works. It seems odd that I should get an error about not being able to enter 64-bit mode as a result of a mis-configured hard disk image, but that's the only conclusion I can draw.
