I tried the same thing sing on a 32bit host with a 32 HVM guest.
Same results.

Is the VESA mode supported at all with XEN?

There is no documentation for it, but the code is present
(it comes from QUEMU), and the option seems to be recognized,
and the emulated hardware is changed.

Is it possible that the VESA bios is really missing from the emulation?
