OK. Yes, I will try upgrading and patching grub.
I am on a earlier etch version  of grub -  version  0.97-23
I see 0.97-27 is the release with Etch stable.
I will upgrade to that and if I still have problems, apply those
patches you mention.
I will not be able to do this until Tuesday though.
