Do you have the full set of dependencies installed? The set I found to
be required on a Ubuntu system was:
  - python-pyopenssl
  - make
  - gcc
  - ncurses-dev
  - python-twisted
  - libvncserver-dev
  - libz-dev
  - patch
  - bin86
  - libssl-dev
  - gettext
  - libx11-dev
  - python-dev
  - tetex-extra tetex-base
  - gs-common
  - pdfjam
  - graphviz
  - fig2dev
  - transfig
  - bridge-utils
  - bcc
