Depends on what you need. In general PV guest would provide better performance.
If you absolutely need to use HVM (a.k.a Fully Virtualized) guest, be
sure to use PV drivers when possible.

I measured disk and network performance (with dd and iperf) comparing
Windows HVM guest (with and without GPLPV) and Linux PV guest on
opensolaris dom0. Not exactly the comparison you're looking for, and
it might not reflect actual performance for real-life load, but it
should give a basic idea of the performance difference you're going to
get.
