Ah, this leads me to my next ?

 

Do VMs need exclusive access to disk or can I have a common space on the dom0 with multiple domUs accessing it via phy mechanism?

Not via PHY – it’s a block device just like any other – multiple simultaneous accesses will corrupt the device unless you have something like DRBD in place.  Probably easier is just an NFS mount.
