As matter of interest, with today's more powerful servers, is it possible to setup a "shared storage box" on the cloud servers themselves? i.e. you have 2x dual Core i7 + 12GB RAM + 4x400GB SAS HDD's, then you setup glusterFS on both boxes and create an active-active sync "NAS" - and the VM's run straight from there.

This, to me, sounds like a theory, and a very good one at that. But, how does / would it work in practice? 

the VM's have a direct connection to the shared storage, and the shared storage sync between the servers on a separate GB link. 

Has anyone done this? Is it possible?

Why would I want to go this router? Simple, to save space, energy, costs (which can be used elsewhere: marketing , sales, software, etc) & carbon footprint. The processing power we have in one single 1U server today is far better than what we used to get in much larger servers 3 years ago.
