This, to me, sounds like a theory, and a very good one at that. But, how does / would it work in practice? the VM's have a direct connection to the shared storage, and the shared storage sync between the servers on a separate GB link.
Has anyone done this? Is it possible? Why would I want to go this router? Simple, to save space, energy, costs (which can be used elsewhere: marketing , sales, software, etc) & carbon footprint. The processing power we have in one single 1U server today is far better than what we used to get in much larger servers 3 years ago.
