Performance and reliability is directly related to the hardware you use.

FreeBSD is very stable and can be very fast if you use fast (i.e. SAS
/ SSD / Fibre Channel / 10GBe / etc) hardware. FreeNAS itself is also
very stable and one of our FreeNAS servers has been running for over 2
years without a reboot even
