Not sure for Linux HVM guests, but FreeBSD HVM and PV guests can be shut down 
by using:

xm trigger <domain> power

It's apparently triggering a clean shutdown and not a hard power-cut.

That aside, go with PV whenever you can, as Todd suggested.
