Problem solved changing the above line with the following one:
vifscript="/etc/xen/scripts/vif-bridge"

So the complete path to the vif-bridge file was necessary.
# brctl show
bridge name     bridge id               STP enabled     interfaces
xenbr0          8000.00248c08d07e       yes             eth0
                                                        vif1.0
                                                        vif2.0
