Hi Ian,
he is using the nvidia binary drivers actually. I was trying to help him before
posting here and this is why I am answering.
The very strange issue is that I use nvidia-drivers too, and I've never had
this issue. He uses gentoo linux too and the same kernel version.

I think he would probably try nouveau even if it's not his favourite choice.
