It can and does cause problems. Not the problem I think you have, but it can 
cause other problems, with similar looking symptoms.

If you intend to use xl then I strongly recommend turning off xend.

Please can you try cherry-picking this commit from mainline:

            The xl save file uses a different header string to the xm one.

I turned off xend, and applied the new file, but no luck.
