Perhaps xend did start and was shutdown, hence the lockfiles (I did not see them, rebooted the system since). You can confirm with "ps aux" whether xend is running, if it is not then I did upgrade from Xen 4.1.2 to 4.3.0. I also purged the existing xen installation before the upgrade so it should not matter.
