Still very interesting, thanks :)  I think I should learn more about
it.  Does it still need fuse, and can you boot from it?

It doesn't need FUSE any more. You can have root on ZFS (don't know about /boot), but I couldn't make Xen boot on top of it (last time tried 6 months ago and didn't spend much time on it). This might interest you:
