Thanks, perhaps the no space error is a red herring due to reporting a
stale errno or something.

If you run "xl -vvv cr ..." then it should tell you the pygrub command
line it is using, at which point you can run it manually and see if that
gives any clues, perhaps e.g. by strace'ing it.
