those will give me this: (newline escapes are mine)
######################################################################
echo    'Loading Xen xen ...'
multiboot       /root:intel:com.slackware:amd64/boot/xen.gz placeholder \
                loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all sync_console noreboot dom0pvh=1 echo
'Loading Linux 4.4.0-rc6-xen ...'
module  /root:intel:com.slackware:amd64/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-rc6-xen \
                placeholder root=/dev/sda ro \
                rootflags=subvol=root:intel:com.slackware:amd64
######################################################################

still no joy and no msg either so we don't even get to noreboot or it's
being ignored...
xen.gz is build off slackbuild's xen pkg (4.6.1). i'm going to try my own
build off the git repo (RELEASE-4.6.1) after this and will report back.

vmlinuz-4.4.0-rc6-xen boots fine on bare-metal btw.
