Well we do have this:

But it's unofficial.  The absolutely most reliable way to get
something done in open source is always to do it yourself. :-)  But
the next best thing is to ask about it on one of the mailing lists and
try to convince one of the regular developers that it's worth doing
(which you've done).

This is now on my list.  As I've said, the posting date for 4.8 has
passed, but it shouldn't be too difficult for this to make it for 4.9.
(You might just ask again when development opens up in January to make
sure it hasn't been forgotten.)
