man amt-howto mentions:

  Fun with Xen and AMT
The AMT network stack seems to become slightly confused when running
on a Xen host in DHCP mode. Everything works fine
as long as only Dom0 runs. But if one starts a guest OS (with bridged
networking) AMT suddenly changes the IP address to
the one the guest aquired via DHCP.

It is probably a good idea to assign a separate static IP address to AMT
then. I didn't manage to switch my machine from
DHCP to static IP yet though, the BIOS refuses to accept the settings.
The error message doesn't indicate why.

Which was written in 2007 so perhaps whatever caused this was fixed.

In my lab I had it static but I concur that having DHCP is an better
idea. The problem (on my Intel DQ67SW desktop board) was that the MAC address
of the AMT was the same as the NIC (eth0) which was mighty confusing.

Considering that the AMT VNC password is suppose to be _exactly_ 8 characters
with one special character and one number I am not surprised. It has a very
strict
view of what is correct.

From my experience, the 'amttool' and 'amtterm' do not like it when they
cannot resolve the name from the IP (or vice-versa).
