Sadly, this query came *after* I wiped SLES10.1 off my development box. 
Gentoo doesn't install the reiserfstools headers, and consequently 
pygrub doesn't try to build the code in question and I'm unable to 
reproduce the issue.
It smells to me like you're right, though -- I *think* the error was 
indeed "cast from pointer to integer of different size" -- and if so, 
then what I've proposed isn't the right fix; something like 
close((int)(size_t)dal->dev) would be closer, though stuffing a FD in a 
spot intended for a pointer seems pretty hokey in any event.
