Is this normal. Could the error have anything to do with me using the dom0_max_vpcus=4 bootarg for Xen?

No this is a unknown
I'm sure you did mean "a known".

benign issue when using KPTI kernel on Xen (see [1]). I still haven't found time to fix it and would appreciate help to solve the issue.

I've looked through the thread, and it seems it is not even decided how should it be fixed. Should it be a new interface, of fix would fit the existing, and the thread died pretty long ago.

Well, someone needs to drive the discussion and write the patch. This is in my long ever growing list of things to improve in Xen. But...

On my side I just commented out that printk, because it renders a debug build unusable.

... if it is unusable, why don't you try to tackle the problem? This is a good way to understand better the intrinsics of Xen. I will be more than happy to provide guidance and review the patches.
