Well, no fix, but some workarounds. I can use ssh, or xm console, to get in, 
copy some .desktop files to my user ~/Desktop directory, and then use the 
cursor keys to select an icon on the desktop, hit return, and launch it. I 
launched konsole this way, from which I can launch other programs, including X 
programs (but still can't use a mouse in them.).

The odd thing is that Xorg.0.log clearly shows the evdev driver found an input 
driver for the mouse, but the desktop isn't use it. KDE's systemsettings 
program didn't help, either:
