managing sources under SuSe is a mess for most end users...

If you prefer to build your own binstuff you may switch to any source based 
distribution like i.e. Gentoo or Archlinux (or NetBSD btw...) which offer 
reliability, quality, good howtos and easy to setup too without to be bound on 
a release, versioning and feature plan of any distributor.
