I took a look and made a few comments but as a preliminary framework it
looks good, thanks!

BTW, we are currently in feature freeze for the 4.3 release and
save/restore is clearly 4.4 material I think, but that shouldn't stop us
from working on the feature it just means it won't be committed right
away.
