I have found the following problems in doing this; The instructions are missing a step. You I found I had to do export pkgdatadir=.before running ./grub-mkstandalone as otherwise it looks for some files in the installed version of grub2 rather than the build location. Your script search -s root -f /boot/grub/grub.cfg configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfgonly checks one location, and the grub.cfg file can be in other places such as /grub/grub.cfg if there is a separate boot partition, or /boot/grub2/grub.cfg for Fedora. For testing it can be set correctly by hand but more locations would need to be searched for general use. It doesn't seem to understand sub-partitions. I can get it to work if the boot files are in /dev/xvda but not in /dev/xvda1 .
