Ok rebooting wo gplpv and using dpinst /F has done the job on my testbox. I tried before wo reboot but this ended up in a network problem, but the box was still able to boot, rebooting wo gplpv and using again dpinst /F has fixed.

Ok i tested with a fresh vista, installing or upgrading didn't

So we need a way for installing the driver, the old dpinst? with
/F?
Because the drivers aren't signed?
I unpackt the drivers using the installer and signed them, then
restarting installer and select only install drivers.

You need to set TestSign mode in boot options.
bcdedit /set testsigning yes
Uhm, and don't forget to add the CA-Cert you are using (on self signed
the cert itself) to users AND systems trusted root ca's using mmc
snapin
certificates.

Ah. Thanks. I think I did forget that in the brief testing I did.

I'm doing some internal re-jigging of the code, and getting the xennet
config stuff working again (currently turning off csum and large send
offload has no effect), but I'll look at incorporating the signing stuff
into the 'makedist.bat' build script.
