Me neither, I'm afraid I've not tried to use mkstandalone. If it lacks the -c option then perhaps it isn't the right thing to be using in the first place. Another alternative is that when running grub-mkimage you can give it a list of modules to build in, so you could try listing linuxefi at that point. My guide does something similar in the "Creating a basic pvgrub2 image" case, using the full path and a wildcard (which ought to include everything I think). It doesn't do it in the other example, I'm not sure why it wasn't needed.
