This issue would have been the same if the user is using the wrong
kernel on bare-metal. He has to read the doc to see which options has to
be enabled before building the kernel.

Regardless of whether they should have known, it is clearly adding to
our support burden (this isn't the first time it has come up, and it has
even bitten me on occasion).

There is plenty of way to fail in early setup when a custom Linux kernel is used. So the user will still have to read the wiki page.

Although, I wouldn't be against any patch coming up based on your suggestion.

BTW, I've noticed that the section "DomU" is lacking of a config for domU. I'll update it on the next docs day.
