I have also just switched to KVM, only with Nvidia cards with OVMF UEFI
guests. OVMF properly POSTs the GPUs BIOS, which makes guest reboots
work with ATI cards. It also comes with all the required patches
to make Nvidia cards work without modifying them (it neuters all
the checks Nvidia drivers do to find out if they are in a VM).

Ok, I guess I'm fighting a losing battle with Xen.

I'll start studying KVM.

Remember that both Jacek and I are using discrete secondary GPUs
for passing to the guest, which is distinctly different from
what you are trying to do (passing the host's primary GPU to
the guest as primary). The two cases are very fundamentally
different.
