Thats not true.
hdtype=ahci is not the default, and as you have seen no unplug happens
for this kind of emulated hardware. No idea if that is on purpose. But
in the end there is little gain in having emulated IDE vs.  AHCI. Try to
use xvda instead of hda.

Got that completely backwards. Thought, mistakenly, hdtype=ahci does not 'emulate'.

Removing

        hdtype=ahci

does exactly what's suggested. On installer launch, it now only sees the assigned disks ... all of which are xvdX.

Once installed, the non-UEFI openSUSE Guest boots successfully.
